artist's statement

What I am interested in, which is very difficult to show on a computer screen, is this beautiful texture of bundled and burnt cloth.  The feathery, loose fibers of torn cotton are soft and sensuous, whereas the burning introduces a small level of destruction.  This is formalized destruction, however; contained, preserved, presented as a contemplative object (which is why many of the forms are mandala-like).  I am attempting to explore the tension between the comfort and reliablility of the frame, and the precision of the burnt edge with the chaotic, swirling lines of the charred fabric.

In the older work, this burnt cloth is sheltered behind a skin of canvas or wood. The newer work presents the face of the fabric alone, without any intermediary boundaries.  It is getting closer.

Thank you for looking at this site and at my work.
